Galeão is well north of Rio's beaches, so most travelers want a proper ride: Uber or 99, a pre-booked transfer, or a regulated Cootramo prepaid taxi. For Uber, international arrivals use the Departures floor at Door D and domestic arrivals use the marked orange, green and purple app zones — follow the location shown in your app. Ignore the touts shouting “Taxi! Uber!” in arrivals — real app drivers never enter the hall. The BRT TransCarioca (two airport stations, to the metro) and Real Auto executive buses (to the South Zone) are the budget options by day. Confirm you're at GIG, not Santos Dumont (SDU).

Taxi

Two official types from arrivals: special/prepaid taxis (Door B, fixed fare paid at the booth — Cootramo is the well-reviewed cooperative) and regular metered yellow taxis (Door A — insist on the meter). The Táxi.Rio app orders regulated yellow cabs at a discount. Be wary of Aerotáxi/Aerocoop dynamic-pricing complaints.

Shuttle

Real Auto executive buses (air-conditioned, luggage space; line 2918) run to the South Zone — Copacabana, Ipanema, and Barra — during daytime hours.

Transit

BRT TransCarioca serves two airport stations — Estação Galeão–Tom Jobim 1 and 2, operating every day — connecting to Rio's metro at Vicente de Carvalho. A newer Gentileza × Galeão express BRT runs to the port-area intermodal terminal with a VLT light-rail link toward downtown. RioCard required (machines give no change).
