JNB

O.R. Tambo International Airport

Johannesburg, South Africa

Where to start
Gautrain / Uber

The Gautrain is the fast, safe pick - station inside the airport, ~15 min to Sandton (Gold Card required) - but it stops early (~20:30 weekdays), so evening arrivals need another option. For door-to-door, use Uber or Bolt (Bolt often cheaper) - request from the designated e-hailing zone in the parking structure (P2, Level 0), not the terminal doors - or an official metered taxi (Bidvest/Rose, no surge). Avoid pirate taxis and touts in arrivals, and don't confuse JNB with Lanseria (HLA).

Pickup Guidance

Rideshare

Uber and Bolt both operate (Bolt is often cheaper), but do NOT request from the terminal doors - follow signs to the designated e-hailing pickup zone in the parking structure (P2, Level 0), then book and share that location. Verify the plate. Surge applies at peak (07:00-09:30, 16:00-19:30).

Taxi

Official metered taxis (licensed operators Bidvest and Rose Taxis) work from a regulated rank outside arrivals - no surge, insist the meter is on (most accept cards). Decline 'pirate'/unofficial taxis and anyone soliciting a ride inside arrivals.

Shuttle

Door-to-door shared and private shuttles (e.g. Magic Bus) have counters in arrivals or can be pre-booked.

Transit

The Gautrain station is inside the airport complex (a level below Departures). To Sandton ~15 min (change there for Rosebank/Midrand/Pretoria), every ~12-20 min. A Gautrain Gold Card is required (buy/top up at the station). Last airport train ~20:30 weekdays, earlier weekends.

Private Transfer

Pre-booked private transfers meet you in arrivals with a name board and wait regardless of delay - the most secure option for late arrivals when the Gautrain has stopped.

Local Tips

  • The Gautrain stops early (~20:30 weekdays, earlier weekends) - for evening/night arrivals, pre-book a transfer or use Uber/Bolt; don't count on the train.
  • Request Uber/Bolt from the parking-structure e-hailing zone (P2, Level 0), not the terminal doors - drivers can't collect at the entrance, and it's the official, safer pickup point.
  • Use only official transport - Gautrain, the Bidvest/Rose metered rank, Uber/Bolt, or a pre-booked transfer. Decline pirate taxis and unofficial porters who approach you in arrivals.
  • Gautrain to Sandton is excellent, but for most Johannesburg CBD spots an Uber or shuttle is more practical (the train serves Park Station, not door-to-door).
  • JNB is not Lanseria (HLA) - they're on opposite sides of the metro, ~70-80 km / 60-90 min apart. Never book a tight connection between them; double-check your airport code.
  • Bolt is often cheaper than Uber here, but surge hits both at peak (07:00-09:30, 16:00-19:30).

Tarmyq local tip

The Gautrain to Sandton is quick, cheap, and safe - just remember it shuts down around 20:30, so for a night arrival pre-book a transfer or use Bolt/Uber. And when you do use an app, walk to the e-hailing zone in the parking structure to meet your driver - not the terminal doors. Ignore anyone offering a taxi inside arrivals.
