Where to start
CTA Orange Line / rideshare from the Door 4 pickup island

The CTA Orange Line reaches the Loop in about 25–30 minutes and the station is connected to the terminal by a covered walkway — you never go outside. Rideshare collects on the lower (baggage claim) level outside Door 4, on the pickup island in the centre lane; cross the inner roadway to reach it. Taxis have a staffed rank on the same lower curb.

Rideshare

Lower (baggage claim) level, outside Door 4 — cross the inner roadway to the centre-lane pickup island opposite the door. Signage at the lower-level exit directs you; the walk from the central carousels is short.

Taxi

Dedicated taxi staging area on the lower curb, staffed by airport taxi dispatchers. Flat-rate options to downtown are available.

Shuttle

Parking and hotel shuttles use the lower-level curb at their own signed doors. Rental car pickup is at the lower level, available around the clock.

Transit

CTA Orange Line, terminating at Midway. The station is connected to the terminal by a covered walkway — follow the Orange Line signs from inside; you don't step outside. Around 25–30 minutes to the Loop, with the line terminating there; Adams/Wabash is a central transfer point. CTA and Pace buses use the Orange Line/Bus Station at 4612 West 59th Street, which has a lift to the platform.

Private Transfer

Licensed car services hold a city commercial permit and use the commercial vehicle staging zone; most meet at the lower-level ground transportation area near Door 4. Confirm the door with your operator.

Local Tips

  • Midway and O'Hare are not interchangeable. Southwest dominates Midway; most other carriers use O'Hare. Confirm which airport your flight actually uses.
  • Midway is the more convenient airport for the South Side — Hyde Park, Pilsen and Bridgeport are all closer from here.
  • The Orange Line station is reached entirely indoors via the covered walkway, which matters in a Chicago winter.
  • One security bridge is the sole airside entry point for all concourses, so the whole terminal funnels through a single checkpoint — relevant for departures rather than arrivals.
  • Bus Route 62 (Archer) connects Midway toward the Pink Line if your destination isn't on the Orange Line.
  • Drop-off is upper level, pickup is lower level. Guides that say otherwise are describing the departures curb, not arrivals.
  • The cell phone lot is on 55th Street; if someone is collecting you, they can wait there until you have your bags.

Door 4 and the centre island are the whole trick for rideshare here. The obvious exit at the nearest carousel isn't the right one — walk to Door 4, cross the inner roadway, and your driver will be on the island opposite.
